Ratsasan is a spectacularly made thriller that will keep you guessing till the very end.

Having the distinction of already playing the lead role in Kollywood’s finest sci-fi movie (Indru Netru Nalai), Ratsasan makes a fine case for adding the laurel of best crime thriller as well to Vishnu Vishal’s resume.

The movie is spectacularly made and will keep you guessing till the very end. Vishnu’s newbie cop solving the murders (which incidentally I found too gruesome for U/A) and identifying the serial killer is brilliantly done. It’s very rare when the stakes feel so real in a Tamil movie. The killer’s motive largely works, but the long drawn climax could have been made a little tauter. You could also say it suffers from a case of coincidences and inconsistencies in the killer’s MO, but it’s nitpicking at this point. The gripping narrative, complemented brilliantly by Gibran’s background score, makes for compulsory viewing.

We have been treated to some quality crime thrillers in Imaika Nodigal and U Turn, but Ratsasan is easily the creme de creme of the lot. However, the Ratsasan might soon face stiffer competition as we await the coming of a Naragasooran. These are exciting times indeed for Tamil cinema.
